The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) was introduced by the Government of Canada in May 2024; the program is helping Canadians access dental care who may not have private benefits. Regular preventive dental care plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. It helps lower the risk of gum disease and tooth decay while also protecting against serious conditions such as stroke and cardiovascular disease.
In Canada, 1/3 of the population does not have access to dental benefits, and financial constraints often prevent many from visiting a dental professional. The Government of Canada has introduced this federally funded program to address this need. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is designed to help meet these needs; it is not designed to offer free dental care for all Canadians or replace existing private or employment-based dental benefits.
The CDCP has been gradually rolling out as of May 2024, starting with seniors 65+, dependent children under the age of 12, and soon dependent children under the age of 18.
**If you have dental coverage through government social programs
If you have dental coverage through a provincial, territorial or federal government social program, you can still qualify for the CDCP. If you qualify, your coverage will be coordinated between the plans to make sure there are no duplication or gaps in coverage.
The Government of Canada has established their own fees for the CDCP. Depending on your adjusted family net income, the CDCP will reimburse a portion of the cost of dental treatment. Find out more information here
